We’re sure many of our incoming 6th graders have questions about band. We’ll answer some of the most common questions here. If you need additional information, feel free to contact us via email.
Do I have to know how to play or read music yet?
No, we’ll teach you how to read music and play your instrument.
What book do I need for beginner band?
You will need Essential Elements 2000 Book 1 for your instrument. Books can be purchased at your local music store, or online retailers such as Amazon. Digital versions of the book for iPad are available in the iBooks store.
Do I need to get an instrument over the summer?
No, you do not. It’s great if you want to get a head start, but not necessary. If you do wish to buy over the summer, please choose an instrument on the recommended instrument list. McKay Music Company will do an instrument drive at the CMS Band Hall on a date to be determined soon.
Where do I look for instruments?
Award Music of Terrell and McKay Music of Garland can help you find the right instrument. Click here for an information document on these stores. We also recommend asking family and friends, newspaper ads, and even pawn shops. Retail outlets that don’t specialize in music will offer new beginner instruments at bargain prices. However, higher quality used instruments can usually be found at better prices. McKay Music will be on hand September 7 from 3:30 - 6 for instrument rentals and purchases.
I have a used instrument that’s not on the recommended instrument list. Can a band director look it over for me?
Yes, we can. Please email us to set up a time.
Please check the full calendar for upcoming dates.
